Akwa United have heaped pressure on Imama Amapakabo’s Abia Warriors following a 2-1 win at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Saturday afternoon, to notch up their first victory of the 2020/21 Nigeria Professional Football League campaign.
The Promise keepers took the lead inside six minutes as Ndifreke Effiong powered a close range efforts pass Vincent Edafe to fire Akwa United into the driving seat.
Imama’s men drew level in the 27th minutes as Harrison Ibukun fired home from the corner kick into the roof of the net.
Akwa United restore their lead three minutes before the hour mark as a penalty kick was awarded to Akwa United after goalkeeper Vincent Edafe had fouled Fernando inside the box, Ndifreke Effiong stepped up and converted from the spot to give United the lead however completing his braces.
Meanwhile, Effiong could have gotten a hattrick on the day but was denied by the cross bar on two occasions
Abia Warriors almost got an equaliser late on in the first minute of additional time but Fatai Abdullahi’s effort went inches wide from goal.
With the result, Akwa United picked up their first maximum points of the season as Imama Amapakabo side remains pointless after three games, following previous losses to Enyimba and Rivers United respectively.
