Club Brugge head coach Carl Hoefkens has hailed Raphael Onyedika and his teammates following their win against Atletico Madrid on match day three of the Champions League on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old defensive midfielder played the entire game for the Belgium Champions and was impressive in the 2-0 win against Diego Simeone’s men.

Club Brugge won its third straight match in Group B thanks to goals from Kamal Sowah and Ferran Jutgla, one in each half.

Having won its first three games of a Champions League season, Club Brugge has become the first Belgian team to do so.

Coach Carl Hoefkens reacted favorably to Onyedika and his teammates’ performance and expressed happiness that everything went according to plan.

“Everything went according to plan,” Hoefkens was quoted on Brugge’s Twitter handle.

“I think we knew beforehand what we wanted to do and I’m happy how my players executed that. In possession of the ball, we were able to hurt them and we did that very well in the first half.

“The second half was more difficult, but even then we were dangerous.”

Onyedika made his debut for the Super Eagles of Nigeria last week featuring in a2-1 loss to Algeria in an international friendly.

Club Brugge will host Westerlo FC in round 11 of Belgium Jupiler League on Sunday before traveling to Spain to play Atletico inside the Wanda Metropolitano for the reverse fixture next week Wednesday.
