Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Thursday has rewarded Nigeria’s only individual Olympics gold medalist Chioma Ajunwa-Oparah (MON) with a three-bedroom flat.

The Lagos State Governor on Thursday announced that Ajunwa – an Assistant Commissioner of Police – would get a three-bedroom flat at the Babatunde Fashola Housing Estate, Iponri.

The reward comes 25 years after former Lagos State Military Administrator, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, promised Ajunwa a house for winning the long jump gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

She became the first athlete in Nigeria to win an Olympic gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta-a feat that earned her an iconic place in the annals of Nigeria history.

She had earlier competed at the African Championships in 1989 and the All Africa Games in 1991 where she also won gold medals in the long jump.

Ajunwa’s potential earned her a place in the super falcons during the Women’s World Cup in 1991, but didn’t get the opportunity to express much of herself on the turf.

It could have been delayed for 25 years, but today she will be the o
.wner of a three bedroom flat in Lagos at the famous Babatunde Raji Fashola housing estate in Iponri,” Sanwo-Olu said as he presented the keys to Ajunwa.
