Makinde Vows To Produce More Champions As Ridwan ‘Scorpion’ Presents Super Featherweight Belt


Govenor Seyi Makinde has reitrated the commitment of his administration towards providing an enabling environment for youth in the state to grow their capacity and maximize their talents.

The governor stated this on Thursday while receiving the winner of the Super Featherweight World Title Boxing Bouts, Ridwan Oyekola popularly known as Scorpion in the council chambers of Agodi Government House in Ibadan.

The bout which held under the sanction of the World Boxing Federation (WBF) in Oyo State on the 27th of Dec, 2020 at Ilaji Sports Resorts between the Oyo State Indigene Ridwan Oyekola (Scorpion) and the South American Opponent Lucas Matias Montesino produced the former as the winner.

Makinde who commended the boxer, the promoter and all the stakeholders for their collective efforts in the success of the bout said it is a great honor to witness the feat in the life of his administration.

Noting that he used to be boxer himself when he was at his teen with his stage name ” Seyi the Bullet Makinde, the Governor promise that his government would explore all the available means to sustain the achievements and produce more champions across all spheres of Sports

“Boxing has always being a treasured sport for us in Oyo State and I am not surprised at his feat because I believe more World Champions are also going to be produced in Oyo State”

He expressed believe that If Nigeria could produce Anthony Joshua in the heavyweight category many youth only need opportunity to get the best out of their talent.

Seyi pointed that part of the reasons for renovating the Lekan Salami Adamsingba Stadium is to create an avenue for talents,give exposure to youth and also arrest youth restiveness while considering sports as a vehicle to leverage in bringing the best out of them.

Adding that the Stadium when completed will add value to the state,he revealed that his government will work towards hosting an international bout , National and International Tennis Championship as well as the next National Sports Festival after that of Edo in the new state of art facilities.

” I am reluctant to give him a car( because he has gotten one) but the government will do something to encourage him and the promoter” he said while promised the 23- year -old boxer cash reward as a means of encouragement

He described the feat as historical saying it will gravitate the youth of the state towards involving in productive ventures and also inspire them to become the best in their field of endeavor.

The Governor also commended the management of the Ilaji Sports Resort for being an enabler of the bouts saying his government will always partner with them.
