Rivers United have extended their lead at the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League table to double figures after beating Plateau United 2-0 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.

The Pride of Rivers dominated the game creating a huge amount of danger for Fidelis Ilechukwu’s side with Nyima Nwagua, Joseph Onoja and Nelson Esor all coming close to getting the game’s opener, but ultimately they coasted to the three points after two goals which were as a result of their relentless pressing.

Chijioke Akuneto scored a first-half penalty after he had been fouled in the box following the Stanley Eguma’s tutored side winning the ball back high up the pitch. Then, after the break, Chijioke Akuneto reacted fastest to get the match winner from a goal mouth scramble, his 14th goal of the season.

After the second goal, Plateau United made attempts to get back into the game but the heroics of goalkeeper Sochima Victor and the tenacity of the back four comprising of Kazie Eyinnaya, Ebube Duru, Fabian Nworie and Denis Ndasi proved too solid to break.

Rivers United looked more confident with Man of the match Morice Chukwu and Joseph Onoja combining well in the middle of the park as they sealed up the game looking better value for their victory.

The result leaves Rivers United 10 points ahead of second-placed Plateau United and the distance could be a huge psychological boost for the Stanley Eguma’s side, as the Jos landlords will have their work cut out to get anywhere near them now.

Rivers United will be quest to Wikki Tourist of Bauchi in NPFL matchday 32 fixture on Sunday June 5
