Consequently upon the dissolution of 31 Sports Federation by the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports last Friday, the governing body of Rugby in Africa has suspended Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) from participating in any of its activities till further notice.

In a letter dated 3rd of May 2021, signed by its President, Mr Khaled Babbou and addressed to Mr Sunday Dare, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Rugby Afrique said the dissolution contravenes the dictum of the NRFF ratified by its extra ordinary general assembly.

“We have learned of the dissolution of the boards of 31 sports federations in Nigeria including the Rugby federation to be replaced by handpicked caretaker committees. We would humbly remind the Honourable Minister that the constitution of NRFF which was ratified at their extra ordinary general assembly meeting held in Lagos on the 3rd of March 2018, was also formally approved by the Rugby Afrique and World Rugby at the time. This constitution, ratified by the National, regional and global level as well as the Nigeria Olympics Committee represented by its Secretary General stipulates the time and modalities for the elections for a new board of the NRFF which must be by a duly constituted Annual General Assembly”, the statement reads apart.

While stressing that the development is disruptive to the union’s operations, the letter appealed that the ministry follow its approved constitution.

The dissolution of the boards of Sports Federations has been met with different views from stakeholders and the public, but the ministry in its basis for the development noted that the boards have all served their four years Olympic circle and there was a need for new leadership.
