Zaidu Sanusi’ Porto have missed out of the Portuguese Primeira Liga title with Benfica emerging winners for a record 38th title, Owosports.com.ng reports.

Both clubs won 3-0 in the final matchday games yesterday, but defending champions Porto needed Benfica to drop points in order for them to retain the trophy.

Benfica defeated Santa Clara, while Porto also smashed Vitoria du Guimaraes.

With their victory, Benfica notched up 87 points, two more than Porto’s 85 points to win the title for the first time since the 2018/2019 season.

Defeat for Benfica would have opened the door for Porto but Goncalo Ramos, Rafa Silva and Alex Grimaldo struck to drag Roger Schmidt’s side to a record 38th Portuguese title.

Mehdi Taremi, Otavio, and Evanilson scored for Porto as they settled for second place and a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League group phase.

Sporting Braga finished third with 78 points and will play in the Champions League qualifying rounds, while Sporting Lisbon came fourth four points behind to secure a Conference League ticket.

Porto would be satisfied with the Portuguese League cup won earlier in the year.
