Tokyo Olympics: Nigeria’s Medal Hope ‘Dwindles’ Following Okagbare’s Dismissal After Failing Drugs Test

After having ten Athletes disqualified on Wednesday from participating at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics games, Team Nigeria have yet again been hit a huge blow as medal hopeful Blessing Okagbare have been provisionally Suspended by the Atheletic Integrity unit (AIU) with an immediate effect after her sample collected tested positive for human growth hormone. According to a release from AIU, sighted by Owosports.com.ng, the sprinter is understood to have tested positive for human growth hormone.

“The Atheletic Integrity Unit (AIU) has provisionally suspended Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria with an immediate effect after a sample collected from the spirinter tested positive for human growth hormone”,The release reads.

“Growth hormone is a non- specified substance on the 2021 World Anti-doping Agency (WADA) prohibited list and a provisional suspension is mandatory following an adverse analytical finding for such substance under the World Athletics Anti-doping rules.

“The AIU collected the sample from Ms, Okagbare during an out of competition test on 19 July 2021, the test WADA Accredited Laboratory that analysed the sample notified the AIU of the adverse Analytical finding at mid-day central European time yesterday Friday 30 July, the Athlete was notified of the adverse Analytical finding and of the provisional suspension this morning in Tokyo.

Okagbare who won her opening heat of the Women’s 100m, was however scheduled to participate in the Semi-Finals of the Women’s 100m this evening.

Nigeria’s chances of getting a medal in Tokyo now dwindling by the day.
