Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Delta State Governor and Board Member of the State Football Association, Mr. Lucky Sunday has informed that a further postponement of the 20th edition of National Sports Festival tagged Edo2020 will result to a setback in sports development in the country.

Recall the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki dropped the bombshell when he said the state was broke and called on the Federal Government to help in funding the festival.

Obaseki said the state was ready to host the 20th edition of the sports event but does not have the financial capacity to host 11,500 athletes and officials.

Sunday who also oversees school sports in the state in a chat with Owosports.com.ng said: “There’s no state that can rival Team Delta, as the National Sports Festival to be hosted by Edo State is for us.

“We’re set for a medal sweep in all events and also claim the overall trophy.

“We want to win the National Sports Festival, present it to Governor Okowa as a gift with a view to console him over the demise of his late father. So Delta State is not among those call for the NSF to be postponed, rather we term it as a festival we have won.

“As I speak, our athletes are still in camp. They are training daily at the Stephen Keshi Stadium and also following the Covid-19 protocols.

“The State has committed much in the project, another postponement, which will third would be a big blow to our athletes and also their morale as they have put in so much in training.

“Recall the state government have been spending to take care of the athletes training, feeding, medical bills, camp allowances and logistics, so postponement would amount to more funds been appropriated again.

“We hope the Minister for Sports and Youth Development, Sunday Dare will come out with something positive and the Federal Government provides the needed funds.”
