President of the Weightlifting Federation of Nigeria (NWF) Dr. Ibrahim Abdul, has disclosed that the National Weightlifting Championship which will serve as the Paris 2024 olympics qualifiers will hold between January and February 2023, Owosports.com.ng reports.

The President made this know while speaking with Newsmen on Monday in Asaba at the venue of the Weightlifting event of the ongoing 21st National Sports Festival in Asaba.

“We want to have the National championship between February and March next year. We were meant to have a championship in September this year we planned for it but it was postponed because of the festival which was initially scheduled for September which would have clashed with the championship.

We also had the African Championship in Egypt we wanted to attend. All this didn’t make us host the National Championship but hopefully by the first quarter of next year we would host the National Championship which will serve as the Olympics qualifiers for our Athletes,” He said.

The president who was present as the Weightlifting event of National Sports Festival kicked off on Monday expressed his satisfaction with the level of competition stating that the standard is high.

“For the 45kg Women that we just saw the standard is very high for what the medalist has done can even go for 49kg if you can jark and clean the 49kg you should be getting bronze or sliver so I think something tremendously is happening here.” He concluded.
