29 Universities Set To Jostle For HIFL 2020

The Management board of the Higher Institution Football League also known as HIFL has released 29 teams list for this year’s edition of the Universities League.

Preluding the list was a news release signed by the Chief Operating Officer of the League, Olamide Adeyemo where the league board revealed that 29 teams have been confirmed for participation from an initial 54 after a through exercise of the accreditation team.

The league had earlier announced the suspension of the start of the season by one(1) month and that fixtures will not return until the ban on the academic and footballing activities elapses.

“After a thorough and rigorous exercise carried out by the accreditation team, a final list of 29 Universities across federal, state and private institutions from an initial 54 schools have been confirmed to participate in the 2020 season”, the statement reads apart.

List of the Universities: Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Afe Babalola University, Ahmadu Bello University, Alex Ekwueme University, Bayero University, Kano, Benue State University, Federal University Lokoja, Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, and Federal University, Oye Ekiti.

Also on the list are; Federal University of Petroleum Resources Efurun, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Federal University of Technology ,Minna,Ignatus Ajurun University of Education,Kano State University of Science and Technology,Kogi State University, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology,Lagos State University,Niger Delta University and Nnamdi Azikwe University.

Lastly, we have Obafemi Awolowo University,Olabisi Onabanjo University,Osun State University, University of Calabar, University of Ilorin, University of Lagos, University of Maiduguri, University of Nigeria,Nsukka and finally University of Uyo in Akwa Ibom State.

The league which started in 2018 is now in its third edition and has since been giving a new perspective of football standard league for Nigerian Universities apart from the National Universities Games(NUGA) which for years was the only competitive stage for higher institutions.

While University of Agriculture, Makurdi became the maiden champions of the tournament in 2018, University of Calabar are the current champions of the coveted Ultimate trophy having won the 2019 edition.

The league board, While maintaining its support to the lockdown orders by the government at all levels, it noted that any return to action will only be done with the full backing of the Government and medical expert recommendation.

The league , an annual football competition for higher education institutions in Nigeria is open to all member Universities of the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) and all games except the Final Four are played in the campuses of participating schools.

Winners of the League are scheduled to represent Nigeria at the Summer Universiade of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) games.
