English Premier League Club, Leicester City are preparing to lose as much as four players to the African Cup of Nations in January 2022 but a statement by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Amaju Pinnick has potentialy increased that number to five players.
Leicester City are already expecting to be without Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi (both Nigeria), Daniel Amartey (Ghana) and Papy Mendy (Senegal) who will represent their countries at the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Foxes could see a fifth player join the quartet at the Africa prime tournament as the football governing body in Nigeria are hopeful to get Ademola Lookman.
The NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, wrote on social media this week: “Ademola Lookman is excited about fighting for a shirt in the Super Eagles. He loves Nigeria. By His Grace we shall conclude the switch very soon.”
Lookman who is currently on-loan at Leicester City grew up in Wandsworth and has represented England at Under-21 level, but owing to his Nigerian parents he is also eligible to play for the Super Eagles.
Pinnick who recently met with both Iheanacho and Ndidi in Leicester was hopeful that Ndidi who has been nursing an injury will start training soon.
“Wilfred is recuperating from an injury that has kept him out for about five weeks. Being a very key player for the Super Eagles, we cannot afford to toy with our last two games”.
“Ndidi has been an integral, committed and passionate member of the Super Eagles. The good news is that his second scan came out very good so he starts training with his club.” Pinnick stated.
