Brazil’s bid was deemed stronger than the European bid, with FIFA inspectors praising the country’s potential to make a “tremendous impact” on women’s football.
The tournament will be held in 10 stadiums across Brazil, including the iconic Maracana in Rio de Janeiro. While Brazil’s women’s team has never won the World Cup, they’re eager to make a strong showing on home turf.
The 2023 Women’s World Cup set records for commercial revenue and attendance, and showed a significant growth in the standard of women’s football. However, there’s still a long way to go in terms of financial equality, with the prize money for the 2023 tournament being far less than for the men’s tournament.
The FIFA congress also addressed other important issues, including a call from the Palestinian FA to suspend Israel from FIFA, and changes to FIFA statutes that could potentially move the organization’s headquarters from Zurich.
Additionally, FIFA president Gianni Infantino proposed new initiatives, including an under-15 World Cup or festival, and a “legends” World Cup.
