Former Super Eagles player Brown Ideye has advised professional footballers to spend wisely during their active careers to avoid financial difficulties after retirement.
The 2013 African Cup of Nations winner made this assertion on his Twitter handle, expressing concern about footballers who went bankrupt after retiring as professional footballers.
“To all professional footballers, both home and abroad, from the day you sign your first contract, home or abroad, make sure you get yourself a financial advisor,” Ideye said. “You need someone to help you invest your money in the right places while you focus on playing. Life after retirement is very long.”
Ideye’s advice comes after several former players, including former Arsenal player Emmanuel Eboué, Vince Young, and Warren Sapp, have faced financial difficulties and even bankruptcy. Some players had to make donations to assist Eboué. Ideye’s warning aims to prevent similar situations from happening to other footballers.
