Team Nigeria got off to a golden start on Day 3 of the African U18 and U20 Athletics Championships, thanks to a brilliant performance by Chioma Nwachukwu in the U18 women’s 400 metres final, at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The teenage sensation, who has been in outstanding form on the collegiate circuit, delivered a commanding performance, dominating the one-lap race from start to finish. Nwachukwu stormed to victory in emphatic fashion, pulling away from the field to win by nearly two seconds an impressive margin in the quarter-mile event.
It was a double podium finish for Nigeria as Hafsoh Majekodunmi claimed the silver medal, running the race of her life to set a new Personal Best (PB) of 54.43s. Her gritty performance ensured a 1–2 finish for the host nation, underlining Nigeria’s depth in the event.
The gold medal is Nwachukwu’s first international title for Nigeria and sets the tone for what promises to be a bright and promising future. Her victory, along with Majekodunmi’s silver, adds to the host nation’s growing medal tally as the championships enter a crucial phase.
