Nigeria international Deborah Abiodun has been crowned the NWSL Rookie of the Month for September following her standout performances for Washington Spirit.

The 20-year-old Super falcon’s midfielder only made her league debut on August 31 against Chicago Red Stars but quickly became a key figure.

She earned her first start in a 2–0 victory over Seattle Reign the following week and went on to feature in three of Washington’s four matches in September.

Abiodun impressed with her defensive strength and passing range. She led her team in tackles and duels won, while ranking second in the entire league for tackles won during the month.

Her contributions helped Washington Spirit remain unbeaten, record three clean sheets, and secure an early spot in the NWSL playoffs.

The Spirit currently sit second in the standings and look strong heading into the knockout rounds.
Abiodun’s honor continues a trend for Washington, who have now produced six Rookie of the Month winners since the start of 2024.

The award, presented by Ally, was selected by the NWSL Media Association and league broadcast talent.
