Former Head Coach of Nigeria National team has congratulated John Mikel Obi on his retirement from football.
The 35-year-old former Super Eagles captain announced his retirement on Tuesday after an excellent 20 years of playing professional football.
Eguavoen was his coach during Mikel Obi’s time at the FIFA U-17, World Cup 2003, AFCON 2006 and AFCON 2008.
The 57-year-old former Nigerian international and tactician in a post on his official Twitter handle, congratulated Mikel for bowing out of football in an empathetic fashion.
“Congratulations on your retirement, John Mikel Obi.
“An honour coaching you at the FIFA U17 World Cup 2003, AFCON 2006 🥉 & AFCON 2008. 🇳🇬
“Enjoy the good life,” 🥂 Austin Eguavoen wrote on Twitter.
Mikel John Obi was part of the Nigeria U-17 led by Coach Austin Eguavoen that participated at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2003 with Mikel Obi notching the silver ball trophy after his impressive performance for the Golden Eaglets.
Eguavoen also worked with Mikel Obi in the 25th edition of AFCON 2006 in Egypt where Nigeria finished in third place and the African showpiece two years later in Ghana 2008, in which the Super Eagles lost to the host nation 2-1 in the quarter-finals.
