Deji Oshilaja is delighted with his progress with Burton Albion as captain, as he expressed his heartfelt thanks to Nigerian fans that cheered his team on during Tuesday night’s EFL Trophy game against Bradford City.
Nigeria-born Oshilaja was on the goal scorers sheet, as Burton Albion beat Bradford City 4-0 in the English Football League Trophy game at the Pirelli Stadium.
The Brewers were on the front foot from the start and scored four outstanding goals.
Speaking to OwoSports.com.ng after the game: “Am proud and it was great to have the Nigerian (NLO COO and five club bosses) at the Pirelli Stadium. They all put the vibes as we could hear you on the pitch, it was good confidence for the team, a very good win for us and we continue to build on it.”
Asked about his growing up, “It was nice as I grew up in London, and my mom obviously, came from, Nigeria to London with my dad. My mom used to travel back to Nigeria regularly and I understand Yoruba fully I speak a little Yoruba language.
“I’ve been to Nigeria a few times during holidays and in May/June I should be in the country.”
Having spent much of his career in English football, the versatile defender and midfielder who began his football career in the Cardiff City academy as a 16-year-old in 2009, talked about his target this season.
“Playing in England has been nice. I used to love Ronaldinho, as when I was younger I used to be a striker but now am playing in defence. I love Thiago Silva of Chelsea, he’s not a very tall centre-back but the Brazilian is classy.
“The target for me is obviously to climb the table as high as possible. We have a good team, we just need to start the season as well as we can, continue to build and get more points as we can.
“I want to play as many games as I can, stay fit, that’s what I use to do and continue to score goals.”
Oshilaja and the Brewers lock horns with Cheltenham on Saturday in Sky Bet League One.
