Chairman of FIFA’s Referee Committee and former accomplished international referee, Pierluigi Collina has noted that there must be coherence of decision between VAR and officials.

He said this recently when taking  part in the World Football Summit (WFS) Live online conference to discuss a wide-range of topics centred around technology’s role in helping referees.

Why asked about a better way to communicate why certain decisions are made so that in the end it’s very clear to people who made a final decision and why without confusion.

The Italian replied that : “VAR has been designed to have full control of every possible incident occurring during the match. What is different is the assessment, because it’s not the technology offering the final answer.  It is the human being who is using technology to make the final decision.

Noting the infallibility of human beings, he expressed belief that  the end point of VAR efficiency and delivery is the human being, although human beings are not perfect.

He added that FIFA has the task to support member associations in their educational programmes with refereeing, including VAR in order to continue enlivening the purpose of the technology.

Going forward, the retired arbiter revealed: “What we are trying to do is to have consistent assessment, uniformity, to have consistent decisions taken by video assistant referees, suggesting referees to review or not something on a pitch side monitor.

Video Assistant Referees (VAR) application in matches has generated mixed reactions from lovers of the game owing to it’s relative inconsistencies in balancing the natural functions of referees on the field of play.
