Morocco’s U-20 side continued their inspiring run at the FIFA U-20 World Cup with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over South Korea at the Estadio El Teniente in Chile, securing their place in the quarterfinals.
The Young Atlas Lions are now the only African team left standing after Nigeria and South Africa suffered defeats in the Round of 16.
The North Africans started brightly and took an early lead in the 8th minute when Shin Min-Ha of South Korea mistakenly turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Morocco’s attack. The tempo remained high as both teams pushed forward with speed and intensity.
Morocco doubled their advantage in the 58th minute through Yassir Zabiri, who finished off a brilliant team move to put the Young Atlas Lions firmly in control. Despite South Korea’s late surge, Morocco’s defense held strong until stoppage time.
In the 90+6 minute, Tae-won Kim converted a penalty to pull one back for the Asians, setting up a tense finale, but it was too little, too late as Morocco held on for a famous win.
With Nigeria and South Africa already eliminated after defeats to Argentina (1–3) and Colombia (0–4) respectively, Morocco’s victory ensures Africa remains represented in the competition.
They will now face the USA in the next round, aiming to continue their fairytale run.
