Flying Eagles Head Coach, Aliyu Zubair, has reacted to Nigeria’s 4–0 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16 at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Speaking during his post-match press conference, Zubair admitted that conceding two early goals unsettled his team and disrupted their tactical game plan.
“I think the early goal was part of what destabilised us. We conceded very early, and even the second goal came not too long after the first. That affected our approach and composure,” he said.
Despite the heavy loss, the coach commended his players for their resilience and positive attitude throughout the tournament. However, he lamented the team’s inability to maintain intensity and press effectively after losing possession.
“Our reaction off the ball was not good enough. That gave the Argentines a lot of space and freedom to operate. Each time we lost the ball, we didn’t fight back quickly,” Zubair added.
Zubair concluded by taking full responsibility for the defeat, noting that such setbacks are part of football and valuable lessons for the young Nigerian side moving forward.
“It’s football. I am part of it. I take the blame and responsibility. When they win, they win, and when they lose, I take responsibility,” he said
