Bayelsa State Governor applauds Bayelsa United FC of Yenagoa for returning to the Nigeria Professional Football League(NPFL) after spending seven years in the Nigeria National League(NNL).
The Prosperity Boys defeated Cynosure FC 2-0 of Abakaliki in NNL MatchDay 25 on Saturday at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Ovom, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State to gain promotion to the NPFL.
Timitimi Ineikade and Robert Mizo scored the goals in each half of the game which was witnessed by the first lady of Bayelsa State, Dr. Gloria Diri, as well as other government officials and sports fans to give the South-South side the crucial victory.
Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, wasn’t left out of the party as he took to his Twitter handle to congratulate the team on their return to Nigeria’s top flight.
“Congratulations to our darling team, Bayelsa United FC of Yenagoa for their return to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) after seven years in the Nigeria National League (NNL). Thank you for making our State proud. My promises to you guys are intact.”
The return of Bayelsa United to the NPFL was also a fulfilment of Governor Douye Diri’s drive to see that the Prosperity mantra of his administration is achieved with sports and ensuring that Bayelsans witnessed top-flight football.
Bayelsa United who is the current AITEO Cup defending kings will return to the PremierPremier they won in 2009 after going down in the 2014/2015 season.
The victory moves Coach Tarila Okorowanta’s team into Nigeria’s top division having failed on three occasions, 2017, 2019 and 2020 before the appointment of the current board.
As the fourth side to be promoted to the Premier League, Bayelsa United joined Group A1 El-Kanemi Warriors, Group A2 Doma United, and Group B1 Bendel Insurance after being assigned to Group B. This promotion was completed by the addition of Bayelsa United.
