Ahead of next year’s AFCON in Cameroon, the former Arsenal, Olympique de Marseille and Paris Saint Germain striker, Kaba Diawara has been named Guinea national team Head Coach.
This was disclosed by the country’s football association on Monday as the Country prepare for the continental showpiece.
Diawara, 45, was caretaker coach for Guinea’s last two World Cup qualifiers last month after Didier Six was sacked in the middle of the campaign.
Six was fired on the account of poor performance as the club failer to qualify for World Cup 2022 play offs.
Reuters reports that the Paris-born Diawara, who also played at Girondins Bordeaux and West Ham United, has no previous coaching experience apart from serving as Six’s assistant.
Diawara played for Guinea at the 2006 Cup of Nations finals in Egypt where they reached the quarter-finals.
The team will be slugging it out with Malawi, Senegal and Zimbabwe in group B when AFCON begins in January 9.
Earlier with Damara in charge, Guinea drew 0-0 against visiting Guinea-Bissau and then lost 3-0 in Morocco in their last two matches.
According to BBC Sports, the new Coach who turns 46 on Thursday, made 15 appearances for Arsenal in 1999 after signing from Bordeaux. The forward went on to play for Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain before making 11 appearances on loan at West Ham.
