An Interesting conversation between football legends Lionel Messi and John Obi Mikel has come to light, showcasing a mix of humor, humility, and mutual respect.
In a recent interview, John Obi Mikel recalled the 2005 World Cup Under 20, where Argentina, led by Messi, defeated Nigeria, earning Messi the Golden Ball and Obi Mikel the Silver Ball.
After the ceremony, Obi Mikel jokingly accused Messi of “stealing” the Golden Ball, saying, “I deserved it. I was better than you.”
Messi responded graciously, “I have nothing to do with it.
The committee decides, but you reached the final and did something wonderful for your country.”
The two met again near the dressing room, where Messi offered to swap awards, saying, “Take the Golden Ball, give me the Silver Ball if you want.” Obi Mikel declined, acknowledging his initial anger and praising Messi’s deserving win.
Fast-forward to the 2018 World Cup, Messi warmly greeted Obi Mikel, saying, “Hello, Golden Boy. I still have the photo of us from that ceremony.”
Obi Mikel smiled, admitting, “You’ve proven yourself to be the best in the world, Leo. You truly deserve it.”
