French football manager Herve Renard made a bold statement, equating the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with the European Championship (Euros) in terms of competitiveness.
Renard, who has managed several national teams including Zambia, Ivory Coast, and Morocco, believes that AFCON is often underestimated.
His quote on bsnsports: “Euro is no less than the Africa cup of nations,” he said.
“In Euros, from the beginning you know at least four or five teams that can win the trophy, but in Africa, all the teams are capable of winning the trophy.”
He highlighted the unpredictability of AFCON, where “big nations are beaten by lesser ones” and “many shocks” occur.
Renard credits this unpredictability with making AFCON “so interesting” and generating a lot of excitement.
