John Obi Mikel Sparks Debate on Dual Nationality in African Football

Former Nigerian captain, John Obi Mikel has ignited a heated discussion on the topic of dual nationality in African football, questioning the loyalty of players who switch allegiance from European countries to their African roots.

Mikel criticized players who hold dual nationality: “Your father is Nigerian, your mother is Nigerian, why don’t you represent Nigeria?”

He argued that these players often prioritize representing European nations like England or France, only to return to their African heritage when opportunities dwindle.

The former Chelsea midfielder emphasized the importance of pride in one’s African roots, urging players to commit to their chosen country without wavering.

“You should be proud to represent your African country,” Mikel stated.

“If you prefer to play for England, maintain your decision until the end, without coming back a few years later.”
