About 10,000 young athletes have officially signed up and are eager for this year’s edition of Obasa Games 2025, scheduled to take place from November 14th to 23rd.
In a press briefing on Monday at the Agege Local Government Secretariat, Moshood Ajibola, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), confidently outlined the plans for this highly anticipated multi-sport event.
“The third edition of the Obasa Games is specifically designed for athletes in the U18 and U15 age brackets and will span all three Senatorial Districts of Lagos State.
“Athletes will fiercely compete in seven sports: Football, Chess, Boxing, Scrabble, and Table Tennis, with the addition of Athletics and Ayo Olopon as new disciplines this year.”
“The LOC is gearing up to conduct the screening process for the 10,000+ athletes at various Education Districts throughout Lagos State.”
“A substantial prize pool of Twelve Million Naira is up for grabs. Among this, ₦6 million is allocated for the football event, and ₦2 million each for table tennis and boxing. Winners in chess, scrabble, ayo, and athletics will receive prize money of Five Hundred Thousand Naira each for the four sports.”
“The opening ceremony for the 2025 Obasa Games will take place on November 14th at Awwarul Secondary School. The elimination rounds for chess, boxing, scrabble, table tennis, athletics, and ayo olopon will run from November 17th to 22nd, culminating in the final rounds at the Agege Stadium Indoor Sports Hall from November 24th to 28th.”
“Football matches will be hosted at three venues, including Abesan Mini Stadium, while athletics will focus solely on relay races, with no field events this year.”
Olympian and Nigerian table tennis legend, Bose Kafo, praised the organizers of the Obasa Games.
“The Obasa Games is a Sports Developmental Programme that prioritises youth engagement rather than solely performance, providing a crucial platform to uplift young people and steer them away from the streets.”
