Nigeria American Football Association, NAFA, has set sight on secondary school students in Kwara for its planned enlarged national schools flag football league.
This was revealed in Ilorin on Tuesday by Coach Tobi Abẹ́, one the NAFA officials in Ilorin.
According to him, the initiative aims to establish a new culture of American football in Nigeria, starting from the grassroots level.
The American Flag football is a variant of the American Football, but less expensive in kitting and adaptable to the African climate.
” I am here on behalf of the association to instill and establish the game of flag football in Kwara State.
” We came for two exercises actually, we came for what we call NSSFFL activation which is the Nigeria Secondary School Flag Football league activation here in Kwara State and we also came for IPP pre-scouting exercise,” he said.
IPP means the International Player Pathway.
“It’s a scouting exercise that enables us to pick talent within a certain age range and requirements.
“Those talent will be given an opportunity to go play the game of America Football overseas.”
The Nigeria Secondary School Flag Football League started two years ago with the first edition in Lagos State which saw numerous schools partake in Lagos State alone.
For the second edition, six state were added like Ogun State, Ondo, Oyo.
“We also had Akwa Ibom and FCT Abuja so we had this states join up to make up the number.
“But we did back then was just like what we’ve come to do here” he said.
