Super Eagles midfielder, Kelechi Nwakali is facing disciplinary action from his Portuguese club, Chaves, for his conduct during a recent match. The incident occurred on May 12, 2024, when Chaves suffered a home defeat to Famalicao, a result that sealed their relegation from the Primeira Liga.

According to reports, Nwakali was spotted using his phone on the substitute bench during the game, a breach of the club’s code of conduct and UEFA’s rules. Chaves have taken a dim view of the incident and have filed a disciplinary case against the Nigerian midfielder.

The club’s management has stated that Nwakali’s behavior was unprofessional and showed a lack of respect for the team and the game. The disciplinary committee will review the case and impose appropriate sanctions, which could include a fine, suspension, or even termination of his contract.

Nwakali, who has been with Chaves since 2022, has made 23 appearances for the club and scored two goals. Despite his promising talent, his career hasn’t quite gone as expected. He rose to prominence in 2015 when he captained Nigeria to U17 FIFA Cup glory in Chile, where he was named the player of the tournament. He was also part of the Super Eagles squad that participated in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The disciplinary case is currently ongoing, and no punishment has been given to Nwakali yet. The outcome of the case will be closely watched, as it could have implications for Nwakali’s future at Chaves and in European football.
