Abdulsalam Hassan, a graduate of Mass Communication, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta has been selected as the only African to cover Chengdu 2021 World University Games in China from 28th July to 8th August 2023.

Federation of International University Sports (FISU) under the Young Reporters Programme (YRP) unveiled the selection of 12 international Young Reporters for daily recaps, feature articles, social media content and television interviews.

Hassan has been championing media courses during his undergraduate programme, where he became the President of the multi-award-winning Press Club MAPOLY in 2021.

He has received different media awards to his credit including; Best Campus Reporter of the Year from Youth Digest in 2021 and Online Sports Journalist in Ogun from Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State Chapter.

The African representative, Hassan expressed that “I am truly honoured to be a part of the Young Reporters Programme in China, and I am looking forward to the enriching experiences and valuable learning opportunities it will bring. I am eager to contribute my skills and passion to the programme.”

FISU Head of Media and Communications, Olivier van Bogaert, disclosed that “We are very happy with the selection. It is a good mix of skills and practice, we wanted more digital media students to support our new social media-, multimedia- and television-driven strategy and we received really good applications covering these areas.”

“The YRP is an educational programme and reflects well FISU’s approach to not only commit to sports. The interaction between students who are graduating in the same field but come from very different regions and cultures is a cornerstone of the programme,” van Bogaert added.
