Gateway United got off their NNL 2022/2023 seas to a flying start following a 1-0 away victory over Crown FC in a match day one encounter at the Soun Township Stadium.
Haruna Salifu scored the solitary goal in the 34th minute when he rose highest to nod in Ovenseri Samuel’s cross at the back stick.
A blistering start it was for the visitors as Sunkanmi Odusina drove to the hosts’ area at the blast of the whistle but his effort sailed over the bar. Swiftly, the hosts also threatened with a low effort saved by Araromi Ibukun
Ibukun Araromi was again called to save in the 6th minute, tipping over Babatunde Damilare’s ferocious free-kick.
Gateway United went all out for a double lead at the restart. It was nearly a solo goal for Odusina Sunkanmi who had a fantastic drive to the hosts area but his low angle shot agonizingly missed the target.
Omolaoye Abiodun almost grabbed a last gasp goal with a header aimed at the bottom corner but Adeniyi Adejare parried to corner.
Gateway United maintained the goal advantage thanks to resolute defending and a heroic goalkeeping of Araromi Ibukun who was later awarded the Man of the Match.
Next up for Toyin Ayinla tutored side is a home encounter against Ijebu United at Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu Ode on Saturday 25th March 2023 at 4pm.
“What a game. The boys played their socks off. They followed our instructions to the letter. It’s a great start. We will take it from here. We are basking in the euphoria no doubt but we won’t overdo it. Our first home game is against Ijebu United on Saturday, and that’s now our focus” coach Toyin Ayinla commented.
