Goals from Sunday Chinedu and Chijioke Mbaoma consigned Rivers United to a Nigeria Professional Football League matchday 28 defeat at Heartland FC on Saturday.
After a thrilling first half that ended goalless despite the number of goal scoring chances created by both teams, the hosts took the lead seven minutes after the interval when Sunday Chinedu nodded home Chukudi Nwaodu’s corner kick.
Chijioke Akuneto went close to equalising for the Pride of Rivers in the 58th minutes after his shot towards goal sailed over the home team’s cross bar
Mbaoma Chijioke made sure of victory for Erasmus Onuh’s side in the 61st minute when he finished off a through pass from substitute Alexander Alfred.
Rivers United kept going, and almost pulled one back when Chijioke Ejiogu brilliantly denied Joseph Onoja – but there was to be no grandstand finish.
Rivers United remain in first position with 58 points from 28 matches.
