The new Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL season will begin with an abridged league format making a return to Nigeria apex league after four years.
The new abridged league will see the 20 teams split into two groups of 10 each to play round-robin home and away fixtures, with the top three teams from each group progressing to the final stage and facing off in another home and away fixtures, to decide the champions.
According to Chairman of the Interim Management Committee, IMC, Honorable Gbenga Elegbeleye, the new format was proposed to enhance the competitiveness of the league and the eventual champions will be rewarded with 100 Million Naira as the winning prize.
The 20 participating clubs will be given 10 Million Naira each as a helping hand to prepare before the commences and match officials indemnities to be reimbursed directly to their accounts by the League sponsors.
The League matches are to be aired live on the Nigerian Television Network (NTA) with further production assistance to come from an HD streaming platform.
The opening fixtures of 2023 NPFL football season will be played on Sunday 8th January, 2023.
