Technical Adviser of Sunshine Stars, Coach Abubakar Bala, has expressed confidence in his team’s ability to avoid relegation in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) 2024/2025 season.
The team secured progression to the round of 16 of the 2025 President Federation Cup following their 2-0 victory over FC Bako on Wednesday afternoon at the Rashidi Yekini Mainbow, George Innih Stadium, Ilorin, Kwara State.
Speaking to journalist in a post-match interview, Coach Bala, a former Kwara United coach, described playing in Ilorin as an amazing feeling, citing it as his second home. He added that the victory today would serve as motivation for his team going forward.
“Yes, I feel happy and at home due to the hospitality, care, and lovebi always receive anytime I come to Ilorin,” he said.
Coach Bala acknowledged that the team still faces challenges, particularly in finishing and utilizing scoring opportunities.
“We create many chances but fail to capitalize on them,” he noted. “However, we are working seriously to address this issue, and I believe that if we can improve in this aspect, the team will do very well in the remaining league fixtures and escape relegation.”
He identified two major problems affecting the team: defensive blunders and losing concentration.
“Playing away from home also takes away a significant advantage, approximately 70%,” Coach Bala added. “In the Nigerian League, playing without fan support is a significant disadvantage. However, we are committed to working hard to overcome these challenges and avoid relegation.”
Coach Bala expressed full confidence that the team would escape relegation with the help of God.
