Akwa United boss Kennedy Boboye has revealed how accident stopped him from being part of the squad that won Gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics after having played all through the qualifying Rounds enroute to the Olympics.
“I played in all d qualifiers for ’96 Olympics except d last game cos of car accident injuries.
“I didn’t recover on time to make d squad to Atlanta & that ruled me out of having an Olympic gold medal around my neck.
“That’s my biggest regret ever. I thank God for life though”. Boboye wrote on his Facebook page.
The Akwa United gaffer Boboye led Plateau United to their first ever league title triumph In October 2018 and his position as head coach after his two years contract expired, he replaced John Obuh as Promise Keepers head coach just midway into the 2019/2020 season, after a brief stint at NNL side Remo Stars.
Kennedy Boboye played as a striker in his professional playing career between 1990-2004, where he played for Sharks FC, Udoji United, he then went abroad to sign for Saint-Denis Saint-Leu football club Paris, he also signed for Fortuna Düsseldorf KFC Uerdingen, after several years abroad he returned to Africa where he joined Manning Rangers FC in south Africa, where he played till 2004, Before returning to the country to play for few month with Dolphins FC until his retirement from professional football in 2004.
