Former Super Eagles defender Abbey Peter George have revealed that selecting Super Eagles matches to play cost Nigeria the chance of making the world cup appearance in Germany 2006, Owosports reports.

In a chat with another former international Ifeanyi Udeze on Brila FM, the Portharcourt born revealed that a number of big name players pulled out of the trip to Angola restricting the team with no option on the bench.

“Big players pulled out of the game in Angola we had just three players on the bench which i don’t even know and never seen before then, they even picked an unknown player who was a Nigerian to sit on the bench.

The Super Eagles lost to Angla 1-0 in Cidadela before playing out a 1-1 draw in Kano which saw the Super Eagles missing out of the World cup on head to head rule after being tied on 21 points.

The former Macclesfield Town defender however expressed his disappointment missing out of a chance of making a world cup appearance.

“Missing that world cup pained me a lot, it was my only opportunity of making a world cup appearance, he said.

Abbey won 18 international caps for Nigeria, he was part of the Super Eagles squad to the African Cup of Nations in Tunisia where Nigeria picked up the bronze medal.

He played his club football with Macclesfield Town in the English League two and Cyprus topflight clubs Port Vale, Crew Alexandra and Akritas Chlorakas.

Abbey George had a not too pleasing career no thanks to injury which made him quit the game very early.
