Nigeria’s male table tennis sensation and No.1 seed at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Aruna Quadri has stressed that he’s not under pressure to win gold.
Quadri, ranked in the top 12 in world table tennis ranking won a silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.
The Nigerian who defeated Cypriot Marios Yiangou by 11-13, 11-5, 11-7, 6-11, 11-8 in the men’s single to keep the hopes of Team Nigeria alive said.
“Am delighted to have won and I must admit that it has been one of the toughest I have played.
“Despite being seeded as No.1, no pressure on me to win gold or a medal here in Birmingham as the results from the games I have played attest to it.
“I want Nigerians back home to keep supporting Team Nigeria as we’ll do the nation proud.”
Quadri also had a soft spot for the women’s team who lost on Saturday to England in both the singles and doubles events.
“Sad they are out but we are Team Nigeria, so we must stick together and support ourselves. So a medal will be for the whole table tennis team.
