FIFA Women’s Worldcup: Super Falcons Silence Host Australia In Brisbane

Nigeria’s Super Falcons on Thursday Afternoon produced a master class performance as they recorded a hard fought 3-2 victory over the Matildas of Australia at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

The Australian ladies who had won their opening game against Ireland came into this fixture with the intention of sealing their spot in the second round of the competition. They began on a bright note dictating play while also enjoying the large share of possession piling pressure on the Super Falcons who were forced to sit back and defend.

The pressure finally paid off when Van Egmood fired the Matildas into the lead in the first minute of the added five minutes after the regular first 45 minutes.

The Super Falcons responded swiftly to Australia’s goal with the equalizer through Uchenna Kanu in the last minute of the added time.

The nine times Africa champions came out rejuvenated in the second half and have the game overturned with goals from defender Osinachi Ohale and Asisat Oshoala putting the Falcons on the driving seat.

Australia got a late goal on the 10th minute of additional time with Alanna Kennedy heading home from the conner for the Matildas to make 3-2 as they look to produce a late scare but the Nigerians held to record a first African win of the tournament.
