French and Real Madrid striker, Karim Benzema has announced his retirement from international assignment and this comes a day after his national side finished runner-up at Qatar 2022 World Cup.
The French team lost to Lionel Messi’s inspired Argentina side in the final of the World Cup played at Lusail Iconic Stadium in Qatar.
Benzema who was part of the French squad for the world cup in Qatar was sent home on the eve of the tournament after picking up an injury.
He was reported to have rejected an opportunity to go back to Qatar after having a spat with manager Didier Deschamps and has now taken to social media to announce his retirement from national duty.
He made his France senior appearance on 9 November 2006 in a friendly against Greece and made a further 96 appearances and scored 37 goals.
He was excluded from the national side for some period following his infamous sex scandal with his former teammate Mathieu Valbuena.
He won his first Ballon d’Or this year after a stellar performance with Real Madrid last season.
