NFF first vice President, Barrister Seyi Akinwumi has aired his Opinion on a proper way of honouring Nigerian legend late Rashidi Yekini.
Barrister Akinwumi responding to question on Kwara Sports Arena stated that Super Eagles all time leading goal scorer late Rashidi Yekini has done more than enough and deserved to be immortalized in the heart of all football fans.
Sir, do you think immortalising Rashidi Yekini should be done by Kwara State or the Federal Government?
“I truly think that as far as Rashidi Yekini’s name is concerned he already by his achievements and records ensured that his name will be forever immortalised in the hearts of football fans especially now that there is easy access to records.
He further exclaimed that those in the football circle in Kwara State in particular and Nigeria in general holds it as their duty to ensure that the legendary striker is immortalized.
“It is us in the sports and especially football circles that have the paramount duty to ensure that he is never forgotten. I think it is our duty not that of the government.
“However there is nothing wrong with the Kwara State Government recognising/remembering a son whose exploits has brought accolades to the State. As for the Federal Government, i would be happy if something was done for Yekini’s name but that government can be excused if it doesn’t. I think immortality is more established when it recurs in the hearts of men then when a statute is erected or a stadium named after a person. Many people know the name of a stadium or live on a street named after a person and have no idea of who the person is.
He concluded by saying, “So Kwara Sports Arena here is your chance to put a marker down lets do something to immortalise Rashidi Yekini in Kwara State.
Rashidi Yekini represented Nigeria at the 1994 and 1998 World Cup’s, Was part of the Tunisia 1994 Africa cup of Nation winning side, he won a total 55 caps for the Nigeria National team scoring 33,goals.
Rashidi Yekini died on may 5 2012 after a brief illness.
