In a move to avoid a scheduling conflict with the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to postpone the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to January 2026.
The initial summer 2025 schedule would have clashed with the FIFA Club World Cup, set to take place in the United States in June and July. Additionally, most European leagues commence in August, making it difficult for CAF to find a suitable time slot.
As a result, January-February 2026 has emerged as the most favorable period to stage the tournament in Morocco. However, CAF’s indecisiveness is causing uncertainty in the African football community.
The postponement is yet to be officially confirmed by CAF, but sources suggest that an announcement is imminent.
